History of Science: Finding Books

This is a guide to finding books and articles related to the history of science and technology.

Finding Books

If Bobst or an NYU Consortium Library (New School, Cooper Union, IFA, etc.) does not own a book that you need, you can request it from Interlibrary Loan.

Using Subject Headings

Subject headings in history of science tend to follow a pattern:

Scientific discipline -- History -- Time period or Geographic location.

Sometimes instead of a time period or geographic location, there will be a publication type, like "Periodicals" for journals or "Sources" for books of primary sources. Here are some examples of Subject Headings (LCSH):

Science -- History -- 20th century
Medicine -- History -- 16th century
Technology -- History -- Iran
Science -- History -- Egypt
Biology -- History -- Bibliography
Physics -- History -- Collected works

For more information, consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), a 5 volume set which contains the subject headings used in BobCat and other library catalogs. Copies of LCSH are located in all reference centers.
