Primary Sources Defined

A primary source is an original source of information, written or created during the time period under study. Primary sources may include:

  • Memoirs, diaries, letters, interviews and other first-person accounts
  • Manuscripts
  • Speeches
  • Oral testimony
  • Official publications, government documents, court reports and police records
  • Newspaper and magazine articles from the period under study
  • Paintings or photographs
  • Film footage
  • Print and television advertising
  • Creative works such as music, poetry, art
