A Message to the NYU Community from Carol A. Mandel, Dean of the Division of Libraries
2012 Construction Projects
In Bobst Library
This summer we undertook two renovation projects in Bobst Library: a renovation of the sixth floor to provide more research and study space, and a three-month installation of custom-made aluminum screens to replace the plexiglass barriers on the stairways and balconies. Both projects are part of a multi-year master plan to upgrade functionality and aesthetics throughout the library. As with previous renovations, every effort has been made to minimize disruption to our users.
The renovation will extend the research commons from the fourth and fifth floors to the sixth. We are adding more quiet study seats, graduate reading rooms and collaborative graduate student rooms, more computers and scanners, a renovated north reading room, and renovated restrooms. The north reading room opened September 4th; the remainder of the floor will reopen in time for the spring semester.
Plexiglass barriers in the atrium, installed in 2003, were an interim safety measure. As part of our efforts to improve the functionality of the library, we have replaced the barriers with aluminum screens that not only enhance safety, but also are consistent with the ongoing improvements in the library and respectful of architect Philip Johnson’s original design. The new aluminum screens have been custom made and fabricated to provide light, air, and views of the atrium as well as safety. As designed by Joel Sanders Architects, they match the color and materials of Johnson’s railings, and use a 21st century digital design inspired by grillwork Johnson used in other atrium treatments.
We appreciate your patience during this work. We know the results will be worth it. As is our practice, we have designed this extension of the research commons with careful attention to our users’ input and needs. We look forward to seeing the productive use we know you will make of these spaces when they open.
