Research strategies

Use Google/Wikipedia to identify synonyms and related terms of interest
Start simple (1-2 words!), and think critically about the results you're getting
Irrelevant results? Try synonyms, or try searching somewhere else
Write down new terms you come across (and try searching them, too)
Search in many different places (e.g,. library catalogs, Google Books, multidisciplinary databases, subject-specific databases...)
Look at reference lists and "citing references"
Ask for help!

Books

BobCat
Catalog for NYU Libraries. Includes print, electronic, audio-visual, and some archival holdings available at Bobst Library as well as consortium libraries. To limit to e-books only, choose "Full Text Online" from the left side of your results page.
Google Books
Search inside the text of digitized books. Click on "Get the book" or "Find in a library" link to locate individual books at NYU.

If Bobst Library, Dibner Library, or an NYU Consortium Library (New School, Cooper Union, IFA, etc.) does not own a book that you need, you can request it from EZBorrow or Interlibrary Loan.

Massive collection of scholarly stuff (free to search, but to actually read articles off-campus, edit the "Library Links" section of Scholar Settings)
ProQuest Central
Library-subscribed "uber database" (includes newspapers, magazines, journal articles, etc., on all topics)

Subject-specific databases

ACM Digital Library
Exhaustive collection of tech/IT articles and conference proceedings published by ACM ("more wacky")
IEEE Xplore
Exhaustive collection of tech/IT articles and conference proceedings published by IEEE ("more serious")

Oxford Bibliographies
Similar to early internet "fan sites", these bibliographies explain (and link to) the most important/fundamental publications on a topic
Leonardo (MIT Press)
The premier journal of record in the art/science/technology field ("very ITP")
Dissertations & Theses Global
Includes full-text of nearly all North American dissertations completed since 1980's (great for their reference lists!)
Google Patents
Search across 87 million patents from 17 patent offices (including U.S., Europe, China, Japan, Korea, etc.)

Webpage put together by NYU Libraries librarian for Journalism. Directories for national, international, regional organizations and governments. Includes links to NYU Public Affairs Offices and listings for NYU experts.

Gale Directory Library lets you search across multiple directories at one time, including directories of organizations and associations.

NYC Green Book
The free, online version of the city's official directory. Includes listings for city, state, and federal agencies and courts, as well as a listing of national and international agencies and contacts.
