书的简介 Introduction to the Book

When China Meets the World: Bilingual Business-Finance Cases is the latest introductory business-finance book published by Oxford University Press in 2019. While presenting classic cases in Chinese business and finance, this book also touches on basic concepts and essential knowledge of business and finance in both Chinese and English. Applications for this book are wide-ranging; the text can be used as extracurricular reading material for high school students, as part of a university-level introductory business curriculum, or in training courses for Chinese and foreign companies to strengthen their business English or business Chinese, etc. The book narrates and discusses important historical moments and critical cases from the business and finance fields that tell the story of when China “met” the world, which was against the grand backdrop of the Reform and Opening-up era. The trials and tribulations wrought by forty years of Reform and Opening-up policies far exceed the scope of this book alone. Nevertheless, the individual cases presented in this book reveal, from various perspectives, key features of the phenomena—as immortalized in the phrase “China changed the world, and the world changed China”—that indelibly shaped the magnificent historical process leading to “China’s encounter with the world.” At the same time, the Chinese and English bilingual expressions presented in this book further serve a diverse readership to enrich their understanding of Chinese language, history, business and culture, among other aspects.

作者简介 About the Author

Zhihong Chen is Research Professor at NYU Shanghai. She is currently holding professorships at both NYU Shanghai and Cornell University. She joined Cornell in 2005 and NYUSH in 2014. She also was Senior Research Fellow at London School of Economics & Political Science  2008-2009 and taught at University of Virginia in 2001-2005. She was trained in three countries and in three different fields: She received her BA in German language and literature from Beijing Foreign Language College, and her first MA in International Studies from Beijing Normal University. She then received her second MA and Dr. Phil. in International History and Sinology from Cologne University in Germany. She also completed an MS. Ed in College Teaching at SIU in the US. In addition, she worked as chief interpreter for many Germany companies which had joint ventures in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan in 1983-1997.
