Children of all ages (and adults too!) can now design their own opera, thanks to the Creative Kids Education Foundation. Using the music of Humperdinck's original score, this "game" allows "players" to choreograph and stage their very own version of "Hansel and Gretel." What a great educational tool... and a fun time!

The Guide to Opera
Once one of the world's most prominent forms of entertainment, opera is still alive and relevant today. This culturally rich artform has been shaped by a myriad of composers, directors, actors and audiences over the past several centuries, rendering it a worldwide treasure to be admired for its influence on society and contribution to modern artforms. As one of the most complex genres of the performing arts, opera is a valuable musical and theatrical tradition to study. This guide is designed to provide historical information as well as contemporary news for the modern student.
This guide is a concise list of resources useful to the general researcher. The guide is geared towards students in the Steinhardt school's Music program, but it also intended for use by anyone affiliated with New York University that is interested in music history and/or contemporary performing arts.
"The Queen of the Night Aria" is one of the most difficult, well-known arias in all of opera. Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for "The Magic Flute," even the most skilled sopranos often struggle to adequately perform this piece.
Composed in 1950, "The Consul" was Gian Carlo Menotti's first full-length opera. Menotti won the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Music and the 1950 Drama Critics' Circle award for Best Musical. This televised version of the opera portrays the direct connection between opera and the modern musical.

Will the City Opera move from Lincoln Center, where it has been housed for years?
Above all, I am an opera singer. This is how people will remember me.
Any subject is good for opera if the composer feels it so intently he must sing it out.
Gian Carlo Menotti
Because, in opera, I have to sing for people that are very far from me, instead of, when I sing a song, I try to imagine to sing like in an ear of a child.
Directing an opera is similar to directing a play. The singing must not get in the way of the drama.
Going to the opera, like getting drunk, is a sin that carries its own punishment with it.
I don't mind what language an opera is sung in so long as it is a language I don't understand.
I have always believed that opera is a planet where the muses work together, join hands and celebrate all the arts.
