MAXQDA is now available for researchers to use on the NYU Virtual Computer Lab.
Researchers who are using NVivo should please take steps to insure independent continuity of access to NVivo, or take steps to transfer projects to MAXQDA. More information about transferring projects from NVivo to MAXQDA is available at the next tab of this box. Please contact email@example.com with further questions or requests for assistance.
In order to transfer projects between software packages, theREFI-QDA (.QDPX files) file format should be used.
The REFI-QDA Standard allows project transfer between participating qualitative data analysis (QDA) programs. Projects can be exported from one program and opened in another, where they are converted into the receiving program's format.
Due to differences between programs (and because the standard is still in development) not all project items are transferred. Currently, the following NVivo items are supported:
See Limitations, below, for item types not transferred.
Depending on the program you are working in, projects are exported as a single QDPX file (containing the project data files) or as a QDPX file and a folder for the data files. NVivo exports a single QDPX file that contains the data files.
The following list will provide step by step instructions to export at QDPX file from NVivo.
The following list will provide step by step instructions for importing a .QDPX file to MAXQDA

For your qualitative data analysis needs, Data Services supports Taguette, MAXQDA, and ATLAS.ti software applications. Currently, MAXQDA and ATLAS.ti installed on computers in the NYU Bobst Library's Research Commons on the 5th floor. ATLAS.ti is also available on the Virtual Computer Lab for NYU students.
Warning regarding the VCL: Please be sure you are familiar with successfully saving your when working on the VCL before you begin coding. We have several incidents of loss to data due to issues in saving materials, therefore it is best for users to export the project bundle if they want a copy on their personal computer. We recommend you access the VCL using Chrome or Firefox, given we have had issues with the Safari browser.
We offer a number of classes each month, which can be found at: https://guides.nyu.edu/DS_class_calendar. For help deciding which qualitative data analysis software to use, attend our general monthly information session: What Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) Software to Use?
You can also make an appointment to meet with a qualitative data specialists by yourself or with your group via this appointment form:
You may also send us your questions via email at email@example.com. Most e-mails will be answered within one business day (messages received on Friday will not be answered until Monday).
