Organizations and Professional Associations

Many organizations (both government and nonprofit) publish advocacy reports and collect or disseminate data in the realm of language education.

In addition to being a way to unite professionals in a profession, professional associations often publish research reports or advocacy papers on topics that fall within their purview. This page includes a few examples of professional associations working in foreign language education. Look for a menu link to research or publications if information on these topics is not apparent. If they publish a magazine or journal, it is likely behind a "Members Only" wall so search the publication title in the library catalog.

Organizations

Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA)
The U.S. Department of Education's OELAnprovides national leadership to help ensure that English Learners and immigrant students attain English proficiency and achieve academic success. In addition to preserving heritage languages and cultures, OELA is committed to prompting opportunities for biliteracy or multiliteracy skills for all students.
National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education from the Department of Education (NCELA)
NCELA supports the U.S. Department of Education's Office of English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement, and Academic Achievement for Limited English Proficient Students (OELA) in its mission to respond to Title III educational needs, and implement NCLB as it applies to English learners (ELs).
Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL)
CAL is a nonprofit organization promoting access, equity and mutual understanding for linguistically and culturally diverse people around the world.
Center for Adult English Language Acquisition (CAELA)
CAELA was created to help states build their capacity to promote English language learning and academic achievement of adults learning English.

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
TESOL's site is the homepage for TESOL teachers.
National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE)
NABE advocates for educational equity and excellence for bilingual/multilingual students in a global society.
National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)
The NCTE is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education.
American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL)
ACTFL is dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction.
International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL)
IATEFL links, develops and supports English Language Teaching professionals worldwide.
Computer Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO)
CALICO is a professional organization that serves a membership involved in both education and technology.
International Association for Language Learning Technology (IALLT)
IALLT is a professional organization that provides leadership in the integration of instructional technology into the foreign language classroom.
