Deborah Willis’s The Black Civil War Soldier: A Visual History of Conflict and Citizenship is one of 10 titles longlisted for the 2021 National Book Award for Nonfiction. The National Book Foundation, sponsor of the awards, describes the work: "Willis tells the often-unacknowledged stories of Black Union soldiers through photographs, handwritten captions, letters, and other artifacts. Willis creates a visual narrative that connects themes of love, loss, bondage, and patriotism, and fills a necessary gap in our understanding of Black American contributions during the Civil War."  Congratulations to Professor Willis, Chair of the Department of Photography and Imaging at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, and to the publisher, NYU Press!
