This guide includes some recommended sources for GPS students, as well as some suggestions on how to search through the library to find sources on certain topics.
Library sources can include information that's available online, in Ebooks or streaming videos, or in person inside the library. You can access online library sources using your NYU login. You can check items out of the library using your NYU ID card. If you need help finding something in the library, ask for help at our front Service Desk.
Course Reserves are sources that instructors choose to make available for students enrolled in a specific class. Some reserve sources, like e-books and journal articles, are available online at any time. Physical reserve sources, like print books or DVDs, are inside the course reserves and media room in the Library. If you want to use a physical reserve source, you can borrow it for 4 hours at a time. The library website has more information about course reserves.
To see what's on reserve for your courses, including GPS, log in to the ARES Course Reserve system.
Subject headings are like labels or hashtags, which describe the main topics of an item in our library catalog. The subject headings we use come from an official set of subjects, the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Subject headings can be a useful way to understand the main topics or perspectives of a book.
The most common way to use subject headings is to find a book in the catalog that looks useful, and then click on the linked subject headings to search for them. When looking at a book in the Library Catalog, scroll down to see the "Subjects", listed in the "Details" section.
In this GPS Course Guide you can find links to subject headings that might be useful, which you can use to browse through books with that subject.
When you follow a subject heading link, there are a few ways you can look for more specific information. On the left side of the catalog page, under "Refine Your Results", are filters that can help narrow down the results.
You can also edit the search to look for sources that have both a specific subject and also certain keywords. If you've clicked on a subject heading, you may need to click the down arrow ˅ to see and edit the search box.
