Gender & Sexuality Studies: Books

This guide provides descriptions of commonly used library resources for research and scholarship related to gender and sexuality.

Helpful Hints for Finding Ebooks at NYU

  • The library catalog's Books & More tab searches for many, but not all, of the ebooks to which NYU has access. For additional suggestions on where to search, consult the Finding Ebooks research guide.
  • The ISBN number for an ebook does not coincide with the ISBN for the hard copy.  Therefore, it is often better to search the catalog by book title, author, publisher, etc. and use the Availability-->Full Text Online limiter in the left-hand sidebar of the results page to find ebooks within the results.
  • Ebooks published by university or academic presses are more likely to be hosted on platforms run by those publishers.  See the Publishers tab on the the Finding Ebooks research guide for specific database suggestions.

Finding Print Books and Ebooks at NYU Libraries

To search for both print books and ebooks held at NYU Libraries, start with the library catalog, called BobCat.  This is also referred to as the Books and More tab because it searches for books as well as audiovisual materials, NYU dissertations, government documents, maps, and other types of physical and electronic resources (but not journal articles).

Quick tips:
  1. Check the status of an item.  Generally, Available means that a copy is in the library and can be checked out (excluding Reference materials or items held in one of our Special Collections).
  2. Note the location and call number of a book, not the ISBN number.  The call number (ex. HT261.4.T5 1998) is what you use to locate the item.
  3. For books in the Main Collection at Bobst Library, consult the call number chart to figure out on which floor a call number is located.
