How to Find Resolutions

A. Using the Index to Proceedings... for the main organ you are working with (General Assembly, Economic and Social Council, Security Council or Trusteeship Council) found in Index Table A of the Business and Documents Reference Center (Ref6), locate the Agenda in the Subject Index. The agenda will give a list of topics discussed in the General Assembly or Security Council and will indicate the subject heading that is used in the Index.

B. Look up the subject heading in the Subject Index.

C. Write down the resolution number, if any.

D. Refer to the following publications, located in Ref6 Index Table A of the Business and Documents Reference Center (Ref6), to find the text of resolutions:

General Assembly

See Resolutions and Decisions Adopted by the General Assembly. Beginning with the 54th session, the text of each respective resolution is preceded by its voting record in Index Table A of the Business and Documents Reference Center (Ref6). For the text of older (pre 52nd session) General Assembly resolutions and voting records, use the United Nations press release entitled Press Release G.A. Resolutions/Voting Record.

Security Council

See Resolutions and Decisions of the Security Council.

Economic and Social Council

See Resolutions and Decisions of the Economic and Social Council.

Trusteeship Council

See Trusteeship Council Official Records Resolutions and Decisions.

For online access to resolutions for the General Assembly (1977), Economic and Social Council (1963-) and Security Council (1946-), visit: http://www.un.org/documents/ (Note that the date of adoption for each resolution is not necessarily the same as the date listed underneath the document symbol. Read document for adoption date.)

E. Not every topic will have a resolution. If you are unable to find a resolution for your topic, refer to the Index to Proceedings... for previous years.
