Software & Analysis

NYU Data Services provides consultation and instruction in using the software packages listed below. Visit the Data Services List of Classes for pointers to course materials and resources related to data software and analysis.

File Extensions

Data and statistics can come in a variety of file formats. Here are a few:

  • *.txt - a text file
  • *.csv - a comma-separated values file (can be used with most statistical softwares and Excel)
  • *xls or *.xlsx - Microsoft Excel files
  • *.sav - an SPSS file
  • *.por - a portable SPSS file
  • *.dta - a Stata file
  • *.xpt - a SAS file
  • *.rdata - an R file
