NYU Data Services Overview

Data Services is a joint service of New York University's Division of Libraries and Information Technology Services. We support quantitative, qualitative, and geographical research in service of the educational goals of New York University. Data Services offers access to specialty software packages for statistical analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), and qualitative data analysis. We provide training and support, as well as offer individual consultations, for many aspects of the research data lifecycle including access, analysis, collection development, data management, and data preservation. Data Services is part of Elmer Holmes Bobst Library's Research Commons. Our staff offices and main lab are located on the 5th floor of the library.

Who is eligible to use Data Services?

All current members of the NYU community, including students, faculty, and staff, and those located throughout the global network, can get assistance from Data Services, though service hours may vary. To ask a question, email data.services@nyu.edu or fill out our appointment form.

Overview of Our Services

Research Consultations

One-on-one or group consultations are available by appointment through our online appointment form, via email at data.services@nyu.edu, by telephone at 212-998-3434, or on a synchronous basis during Data Services' staffed hours. Please reference our expectations for consultations and synchronous help for more information. For assistance with digital scholarship projects, Data Services frequently works with and sometimes refers patrons to NYU Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Services. Assistance is available for all of Data Services' supported software packages as well as for using NYU's High Performance Computing clusters.

Access to Facilities and Software

The Data Services lab is equipped with 26 workstations where NYU faculty, students, and staff can receive consultations or use specialized software. Please refer to our Computer Use Policy for specific guidelines that pertain to software and workstation access.

Data Services lab workstations loaded with specialty research software packages are available for use by current members of the NYU community by reservation during our staffed hours, and otherwise, on a first-come, first-serve basis. All users are expected to abide by the general Libraries Code of Conduct

Instruction and Training Resources

Data Services provides a set of regularly scheduled classes and tutorial sessions on select software packages each semester. The dates and times of our tutorials are released upon the beginning of each semester, and registrations are available up to two weeks prior to the class. Anyone who has access to Bobst Library or has a valid NetID is able to register for and attend Data Services classes.

Data Services also provides documentation and a list of learning outcomes for each one of our classes. We encourage anyone to use our resources.

Data Reference and Data Collections

Data Services provides access to and assistance in locating numeric and spatial datasets. We provision access to data in the Spatial Data Repository, and we license many forms of data, which is available to current members of the NYU community.

Data Management

Consultations are available for general research data management questions as well as writing data management plans for grant proposals. NYU Libraries is also a member of the Data Curation Network and offers curation and dataset review for those submitting data for reuse and discovery.
