Graduate Student Services: Space Locations & Features

A guide to services and resources especially for Graduate Students at NYU Libraries



Bobst Library has locations to address your needs as a graduate student. This guide explains which spaces match your preferred research environment.

Study Need Location Features
Quiet public space

North Reading Rooms (floors 2, 4, 6, 8, 10)

Natural light, mix of large and small tables, scholarly atmosphere.
Daily use, quiet grad-only spaces

Graduate Study Spaces (Floors 5, 6, and Lower Level 1) 

Individual Study Rooms (throughout Bobst)  

Large-footprint individual workspace, controllable lighting, comfortable seating; some are reservable.

Long term reservation-based graduate spaces

Dissertation Writers' Rooms (4, 5, & 6)

Large individual workspace, filing cabinet or Moby (mobile office), seating. For more information, go here.

Group discussion and interaction

Graduate Collaboratives (Lower Level 1; floors 4 & 6; 10th floor Graduate Exchange)

Graduate Exchange (10th floor NW corner)

Group Study Rooms (Lower Levels 1 and 2, 9th floor)

Graduate Collaboratives have:
Whiteboards, large tables, interactive atmosphere, LCD screens or projectors and laptop hookups. Instructional manual available in most rooms. To reserve, go here.

Graduate Exchange has:
Open seating at tables and benches, writable and tackable walls,  writable tables, excellent power availability

Group Study Rooms have:
Whiteboards, LCD screens, and laptop hookups. To reserve, go here.

General computing

Research Commons (4 and 5 south)

BLCC (Lower Level 1)

Productivity and creative software; scanners (LL 1 computer classrooms only)
Advanced computing

Data Services lab (5 floor Research Commons)

Digital Studio (5 floor Research Commons)


Video editing, still image editing, statistical packages. Click for more information about the Digital Studio and Data Services.
Laptop-friendly areas

Reference rooms (Floor 1 and Mezzanine)

Research Commons (Floors 4, 5, & 6)

Wireless network, power outlets, proximity to book stacks and reference librarians.
Storage Lockers (throughout Bobst)

Laptop security cables available at Help Desk (Lower Level 1)

Rooms come in a variety of sizes, from small 1-2 person rooms, to 4-6 person rooms, to rooms that hold 10-12.

Rooms are subject to these Policies:

  • You must be a graduate student
  • You can reserve up to 3 hours/day
  • You can make only one reservation/day
