Writing & Stylistics Guides

This guide is designed to support students at NYU Shanghai in writing-intensive courses. The sources under General Writing & Stylistics Guides will be especially useful for students who are new to academic writing: these resources focus on elements of grammar & style, conventions of writing, and becoming familiar with the genres of academic writing. For support in properly citing materials in MLA, APA, Chicago, or other citation formats, please visit the Style Guides page.

Students taking upper-division courses in the Social Sciences & Humanities (including Creative Writing, Journalism, and Creative Nonfiction, the Social Sciences, and the Arts & Humanities), STEM, or Business courses will benefit from style guides which are more discipline-oriented. These guides will help students develop their own scholarly voice within the writing conventions common to these disciplines.

The Publishing, Thesis Writing, and Perspectives on Professional/Academic Writing tab is designed for students preparing capstone projects or theses, considering publishing or submitting materials to academic conferences, or who need to refine their writing skills for their future graduate studies.

This guide emphasizes e-books and print materials located in the NYU Shanghai library. Users at other campuses should check their local holdings for similar titles. This guide does not include resources on writing Master's- or PhD-level theses or dissertations, guides on reading academic texts, or materials on grant-writing.
