Ukraine Research Guide

This guide assembles recommended literature and other resources for all who are interested in the history of Ukraine and its place in the global context.

About this guide

This research guide is created in response to unfolding war between Ukraine and Russian Federation. It seeks to assemble materials that help illuminate the current conflict between two neighboring Slavic countries as well as to place the Ukrainian state into a larger international and historical context. The guide includes books, both print and electronic, recommended databases as well as some video materials. Materials recommended in this guide are in English, except the last selection under "Russian perspectives" and the database of Donetsk and Luhansk newspapers in the "Conflict in the Eastern Ukraine" tab which are in Russian. The "New Sources" page includes materials in English, Ukrainian and Russian.

This guide will be regularly update to include new resources.

All materials mentioned in this guide are available at NYU Libraries.

Search strategy suggestions

If you would like to browse library shelves for books on Ukraine, these are the areas where you are likely to find high concentration of materials:

  • DK508: History of Ukraine
  • DK500.D67: Donets Basin (Ukraine and Russia). Please note that the territory of Donbass/Donbas which is frequently mentioned in the news has a separate number and a somewhat counterintuitive subject heading, Donets Basin (Ukraine and Russia) . Please use it instead of Donbass or Donbas.
  • PG3900-3987: Ukrainian literature
  • HN530.9: Social history and conditions, social problems, social reform
  • JN6630-6639: Ukrainian political institutions

You can also search various catalogs (NYU's BobCat, WorldCat, Library of Congress catalog, etc), using these subject headings, for general books on Ukrainian history, literature and social conditions, as well as specific events in Ukrainian history:

  • Ukraine -- History
  • Ukraine Conflict, 2014-
  • Ukraine -- History -- Famine, 1932-1933
  • Ukraine -- History - Euromaidan Protests, 2013-2014
  • Donetsk International Airport, Battle for, 2nd, Ukraine, 2014-2015
  • Ukraine -- Economic conditions -- 1991-
  • Ukraine -- Politics and government
  • Ukraine - Civilizatin
  • Ukraine - Social conditions

Obviously, this is just a short list of suggestions. Please do not hesitate to reach out directly to me with any questions related to Ukraine, Russia and other regions of Eastern Europe and former Soviet territories of influence.
