Fair Use Week at the NYU Libraries

by NYU Libraries Communications on 2021-02-18T07:00:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

The NYU Libraries will celebrate Fair Use Week this year from Monday, February 22 through Friday, February 26. According to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), “Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week is an annual celebration of the important doctrines of fair use and fair dealing. It is designed to highlight and promote the opportunities presented by fair use and fair dealing, celebrate successful stories, and explain these doctrines.”

Fair use is an important exception to copyright that allows the use of copyright-protected materials without permission under certain circumstances.

“Fair use plays a significant role in the way copyright serves the public interest in addition to creators' interests,” said NYU Scholarly Communications Librarian Anastasia Chiu. “Without it, many of the key ways that we build discussion in the classroom, or engage in critiques in research, would become impossible.”

To correspond with the week’s significance, Anastasia will present a workshop on fair use topics on behalf of the NYU Libraries’ Department of Scholarly Communications and Information Policy. Fair Use: Using Copyrighted Materials in Research and Teaching is scheduled for February 23, from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET. This workshop is open to faculty, staff, and students who want to know more about how to think through fair use when using copyrighted materials in teaching and research. Presenters will go over a basic primer on what copyright is, then focus on fair use, including ways to apply fair use to some hypothetical scenarios.
