A few of the many photos digitized in this project on display in a Summer 2025 exhibition in NYU Special Collections. Photography by Nora Lambert (NYU-TV).
NYU Libraries is pleased to announce the completion of a multi-year project, Bringing the Daily Worker to the World, supported by a generous $142,766 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).
Between August 2023 and August 2025, staff from across four divisions of NYU Libraries—NYU Special Collections, Archival Collections Management, Digital Library Technology Services, and the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation and Conservation Lab—worked together to digitize, conduct quality control on, and publish nearly 185,000 negatives in the Daily Worker and Daily World Negatives Collection.
The Daily Worker and Daily World newspaper photographers drew attention to overlooked yet pressing social issues and offered a counterbalance to the mainstream press. The digitized images, produced from 1930 to 2006 by staff and freelance photographers for the Daily Worker and its successor, the Daily People's World, reflect a rich record of American political life, culture, and activism.
The digitized negatives are now available in the Daily Worker and Daily World Negatives Collection finding aid, presenting many of the images from the newspaper to the public for the first time. Researchers are encouraged to browse or search through the finding aid to discover this expansive visual archive of American democracy, history, and culture.
