Complementary & Alternative Medicine

Guide to locating research evidence for complementary and alternative therapies.

Searching in Library Catalogs

Books and journals about complementary and alternative medicine can be located by searching the library's catalog.

You can retrieve records using keyword searches, but also consider using the appropriate Library of Congress subject headings.  Some relevant subject headings include:

  • Alternative medicine
  • Integrative medicine
  • Complementary therapies
  • Holistic medicine
  • Naturopathy
  • Herbs
  • Holistic nursing

The subject headings are used for books on general aspects of complementary and alternative medicine, historical treatment, clinical research, consumer health information, and vocational guidance. For a more specific search, try adding a sub-heading, for instance:

  • Alternative medicine--Social aspects
  • Alternative medicine--Dictionaries
  • Alternative medicine--History
  • Holistic nursing--Standards
  • Holistic nursing--Handbooks, manuals, etc
  • Herbs--Therapeutic use
