Religious Studies

This guide provides an overview of resources for the academic study of religion.

Online Journals

Journals on the following list that are described as 'generalist' seek to cover a wide range of disciplinary focal points, methodological approaches, traditions, cultures, and time periods. The remaining titles listed offer a somewhat narrower focus but comprise some of the most widely used journals in religion scholarship in the United States, especially among scholars who utilize various social scientific methods.

Finding Journal Articles

Listed below are several important databases that index scholarly literature about religion. These databases can be very useful when you're trying to get the broadest possible overview of the scholarly work on a given topic. Though NYU does not subscribe to all of the journals that these databases cover, you can almost always get articles not available at NYU through Interlibrary Loan

For a full list of databases pertaining to religious studies, including some that are highly specialized, please consult the page Databases A-Z: Religion on the library's site.
