Data Services Student Consultant - Data Visualization

 

Position Overview: Data Services Student Consultants work in the Data Services lab on the 5th floor of Bobst Library, providing data visualization & analysis support to the faculty, staff, and students of NYU. Data visualization is about presenting large amounts of information in ways that are universally understandable or easy to interpret and spot patterns, trends and correlations. These representations include charts, graphs, infographics and other pictorial diagrams. Duties include: Use of data visualization tools and software to communicate information in these ways to NYU patrons as well as provide instruction on the use of visualization tools. This is an On-Campus, Paid Job - $16 to $18/hour. Consultants will be expected to be available for 15-30 hours per week for the term and may continue into the following semester based on performance and eligibility.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Clear understanding of data visualization principles, both for static and interactive visualizations
  • Experience building visualizations using two or more of the following: Tableau, R (ggplot, Shiny), Python (bokeh, matplotlib) or D3.js, supplemented by an understanding of HTML and Javascript
  • Critical thinking: the ability to look at numbers, trends, and data and suggest new and varied visualization solutions based on the findings
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong attention to detail
 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a graduate degree in Math, Computer Science, Data Science, Data Analytics, Information Science, Interactive and Multimedia Graphic Design or a related discipline.
  • High proficiency with Tableau supplemented by data visualization experience using Python and/or R
  • Expertise in visual design supported by formal training and/or education.
  • Familiarity with visualizations of text and network data
  • Ability to work with complex datasets
  • Proficiency in graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is a plus.

Data Services Student Consultant - Quantitative

Position Overview: Data Services student consultants work in the Data Services lab on the 5th floor of Bobst Library, providing quantitative/statistical data analysis support to the faculty, staff, and students of NYU. Duties include: providing statistical data analysis consultations on a walk-in and appointment basis, leading Data Services instructional tutorials, preparing training documentation, and participating in select projects. This is an On-Campus, Paid Job - $16 to $18/hour. Consultants will be expected to be available for 15-30 hours per week for the term and may continue into the following semester based on performance and eligibility.

Qualifications: Full-time students wishing to be considered should have experience conducting quantitative academic research with statistical software, Stata or R in particular, supplemented by expertise in SAS, JMP, SPSS, or MATLAB. Fluency in two or more data analysis software packages is a plus. Applicants should have proficiency with commonly used quantitative research methods and be familiar with data manipulation (e.g. merging or restructuring data sets), data cleaning, and basic statistics for analysis of categorical and continuous data (e.g. t-tests, chi-square tests, correlations, ANOVAs, regressions, etc.). Applicants should also have the desire to improve their knowledge of research methodologies.

Data Services Student Consultant - GIS

Position Overview: Data Services Student Consultants work in the Data Services lab on the 5th floor of Bobst Library, providing geospatial data analysis support to the faculty, staff, and students of NYU. Duties include: providing geospatial analysis consultation on a walk-in and appointment basis, leading Data Services instructional tutorials, preparing training documentation, and participating in select projects. This is an On-Campus, Paid Job - $16 to $18/hour, 15-30 hours per week. Consultants will be expected to be available during our staffed hours for the term and may continue into subsequent semesters, based on the performance and eligibility criteria.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at NYU.
  • Basic knowledge of ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro, and desire to learn advanced techniques in GIS as well as other software packages supported by Data Services, such as ArcGIS Online, QGIS, and Carto.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and public service skills. Adaptable to dynamic work environment and varied requests from patrons.
  • Desire to improve knowledge of research methodologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients/patrons (student, faculty and staff) with GIS and mapping queries via appointments, walk-ins, and telephone.
  • Assist, update and/or conduct instructional tutorials in ArcGIS, QGIS, Carto, etc.
  • Gain advanced GIS skills in support of services provided by Data Services.
  • Document client interactions.
  • Assist with metadata organization and data cleaning.
  • Perform administrative tasks as directed by Data Services Admin.
  • Research and document external resources for spatial datasets.
  • Assist Data Services Staff on internal GIS projects.
  • Promote GIS services at NYU.

Consultants will be expected to be available for 15-30 hours per week for the term and may continue into the following semester based on performance and eligibility.
