Student Consultant Positions

Data Services Student Consultant - GIS

Position Overview: Data Services Student Consultants work with the Data Services team, providing geospatial data analysis support to the faculty, staff, and students of NYU. Duties include: providing geospatial analysis consultation via chat and video appointment basis, leading Data Services instructional tutorials, preparing training documentation, and participating in select projects. This is a Paid Job - $18 to $26.75/hour, 8-20 hours per week. Consultants will be expected to be available during our staffed hours for the term and may continue into subsequent semesters, based on the performance and eligibility criteria. Performance feedback is communicated to the student consultant throughout the semester, based on project-work and feedback from patron interactions.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with both QGIS and ArcGIS Pro 
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and public service skills. Adaptable to dynamic work environments and varied requests from patrons.
  • Enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at NYU.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced techniques in GIS, as well as other software packages supported by Data Services, such as ArcGIS Online, Python, and R.
  • Desire to improve knowledge of research methodologies.
  • Interest in finding creative ways to promote services offered by Data Services.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist clients/patrons (student, faculty and staff) with GIS and mapping queries via appointments and web chats.
  • Assist, update and/or conduct instructional tutorials in QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, R, etc.
  • Gain advanced GIS skills in support of services provided by Data Services.
  • Diligently document client interactions.
  • Perform administrative tasks as directed by Data Services staff.
  • Assist Data Services staff on internal GIS and Data Services projects like assisting with metadata organization and data cleaning, researching and documenting external resources for spatial datasets, helping organize Data Services hosted or co-hosted events and workshops, etc.
  • Promote GIS services at NYU.

Data Services Student Consultant - Qualitative Data Analysis

Position Overview: NYU Data Services is seeking a Qualitative Data Analysis Student Consultant. This position is suited for a student with a strong research background in any discipline with an interest in providing support for researchers working on qualitative research projects, knowledge in survey/questionnaire design is preferred. This is a paid job - $18 to $26.75/hour, 8-20 hours per week. Consultants will be expected to be available during our staffed hours for the term and may continue into subsequent semesters, based on the performance and eligibility criteria. Performance feedback is communicated to the student consultant throughout the semester, based on project-work and feedback from patron interactions.

  • Required knowledge of qualitative research methods and at least one tool such as Taguette, ATLAS.ti, and/or MAXQDA.
  • Preferred knowledge of survey design and/or use of survey tools such as Qualtrics.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and public service skills.
  • Adaptable to dynamic work environments and varied requests from patrons.
  • Desire to improve knowledge of research methodologies.

  • Respond to patrons (students, researchers, and administrators) with qualitative research, Taguette, ATLAS.ti, or MAXQDA and related queries via appointments and chat.

Data Services Student Consultant - Data Management and Qualitative Research Support

Position Overview: This position is suited for a student with a strong research background in any discipline that focuses on qualitative research and an interest in fostering good research data management in the NYU community. Students of all technical expertise will be considered, with a preference for those with experience in qualitative research methods and qualitative research tools. 

This is a paid job - $18 to $26.75/hour, 8-20 hours/week.   • Knowledge of at least one tool (e.g., ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, Taguette).
  • Knowledge of project management best practices, preferably geared towards research (e.g. how to keep documentation).
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid-environment, with a strong ability to self-pace projects.
  • Basic knowledge of screen recording and video editing.

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to patrons (students, researchers, and administrators) with qualitative research tools, data management practices, and data finding queries via appointments, and chat.
  • Assist, update, and/or conduct instructional tutorials on research data management and qualitative research tools.
  • Record all patron interactions through a standardized form.
  • Assist Data Management librarians in reviewing data management plans submitted as part of grant applications.
  • Perform departmental project-related tasks in collaboration with Data Services full-timer, such as: creating short instructional videos, for instance displaying some functionality of a tool using open data or Libraries-collected data with a specialized tool for a public project, showcasing how the tool and dataset can be used by others in the NYU community other projects as proposed by Student Consultant.

Duties include: providing statistical data analysis consultations on a walk-in and appointment basis, leading Data Services instructional tutorials, preparing training documentation, and participating in select projects. This is a Paid Job - $18 to $26.75/hour, 8-20 hours per week. Consultants will be expected to be available during our staffed hours for the term and may continue into subsequent semesters, based on the performance and eligibility criteria. Performance feedback is communicated to the student consultant throughout the semester, based on project-work and feedback from patron interactions.

Qualifications: Full-time students wishing to be considered should have experience conducting quantitative academic research with statistical software, Stata or R in particular, supplemented by expertise in SAS, JMP, SPSS, or MATLAB. Fluency in two or more data analysis software packages is a plus. Applicants should have proficiency with commonly used quantitative research methods and be familiar with data manipulation (e.g. merging or restructuring data sets), data cleaning, and basic statistics for analysis of categorical and continuous data (e.g. t-tests, chi-square tests, correlations, ANOVAs, regressions, etc.). Applicants should also have the desire to improve their knowledge of research methodologies.
