Student Consultant Positions

Data Services Student Consultant - Data Visualization

Position Overview: Data Services Student Consultants work remotely with the Data Services team, providing data visualization & analysis support to the faculty, staff, and students of NYU. Data visualization is about presenting large amounts of information in ways that are universally understandable or easy to interpret and spot patterns, trends and correlations. These representations include charts, graphs, infographics and other pictorial diagrams. Duties include: Use of data visualization tools and software to communicate information in these ways to NYU patrons as well as provide instruction on the use of visualization tools. This is a Remote, Paid Job - $18 to $20/hour, 15-28 hours per week. Consultants will be expected to be available during scheduled hours for the term and may continue into subsequent semesters, based on the performance and eligibility criteria. Performance feedback is communicated to the student consultant throughout the semester, based on project-work and feedback from patron interactions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Clear understanding of data visualization principles, both for static and interactive visualizations
  • Experience building visualizations using two or more of the following: Tableau, R (ggplot, Shiny), Python (bokeh, matplotlib) or D3.js, supplemented by understanding of HTML and Javascript
  • Critical thinking: ability to look at numbers, trends, and data and suggest new and varied visualization solutions based on the findings
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Strong attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing graduate degree in Math, Computer Science, Data Science, Data Analytics, Information Science, Interactive and Multimedia Graphic Design or a related discipline. 
  • High proficiency with Tableau supplemented by data visualization experience using Python and/or R
  • Expertise in visual design supported by formal training and/or education.
  • Familiarity with visualizations of text and network data
  • Ability to work with complex datasets
  • Proficiency in graphics software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is a plus.

Data Services Student Consultant - Qualitative Data Analysis

Position Overview: NYU Data Services is seeking a Qualitative Data Analysis Student Consultant. Working remotely, this position is suited for a student with a strong research background in any discipline with an interest in providing support for researchers working on qualitative research projects, knowledge in survey/questionnaire design is preferred. A specialty in qualitative data collection and analysis with experience using software tools is required (i.e. ATLAS.ti & MAXQDA preferred) and working with survey design software (i.e. Qualtrics & REDCap). Duties include providing consultations for qualitative analysis and survey design via email, ask-a-librarian chat service, and by appointment. Consultants are expected to lead Data Services instructional tutorials, prepare training documentation, and participate in select projects. This is a Remote, Paid Job $18- $20/hour. Consultants will be expected to be available for 10-20 hours per week for the term and may continue into the following semester based on eligibility and performance. Performance feedback is communicated to the student consultant throughout the semester based on project-work and feedback from patron interactions.

Qualifications: 

  • Full-time enrolled student in a graduate degree program at NYU.
  • Experience working on a significant research project, especially those conducted under the guidance of a faculty researcher, mentor, or PI.
  • Required knowledge of qualitative research methods and tools such as Taguette, ATLAS.ti, and/or MAXQDA.
  • Preferred knowledge of survey design and/or use of survey/electronic lab notebook tools such as Qualtrics and REDCap.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and public service skills.
  • Adaptable to dynamic work environments and varied requests from patrons.
  • Desire to improve knowledge of research methodologies. 

 
Responsibilities:

  • Respond to patrons (students, researchers, and administrators) with qualitative research, Taguette, ATLAS.ti, or MAXQDA queries via appointments, email, and chat-service.
  • Respond to patrons (students, researchers, and administrators) with survey design, Qualtrics,  or REDCap queries via appointments, email, and chat-service.
  • Assist, update, and/or conduct instructional tutorials on topics such as Qualitative research techniques, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA, Qualtrics, and/or REDCap.
  • Document all client interactions.
  • Perform departmental project-related tasks as directed by Data Services Staff

This is a Remote, Paid Job $18- $20/hour. Consultants will be expected to be available for 10-24 hours per week for the term and may continue into the following semester based on performance and eligibility. Performance feedback is communicated to the student consultant throughout the semester based on project-work and feedback from patron interactions.

  • Perform administrative tasks as directed by Data Services Staff
  • Assist Data Services Staff on Survey Design projects.
  • Promote Survey Design services at NYU.

Performance feedback is communicated to the student consultant throughout the semester based on project-work and feedback from patron interactions.
