ABBYY FineReader Tutorial

A guide to using ABBYY FineReader for text extraction from documents using OCR (Optical Character Recognition).

Creating Areas

Step 4. Recognizing Text, Image, or Table Areas (Page Segmentation)

Here is a screen shot of the page area recognition toolbar:

Screen capture of the small ribbon toolbar in ABBYY FineReader that allows the user to select which type of area box to draw, whether text, image, or table.

On initially loading a document, unless interrupted ABBYY will attempt to find text, image, or table areas on the page for character detection. These “areas” indicate where an extractable text, image, or table has been found.

The toolbar shown above can be found in the ABBYY image pane and with its tools you can:

  • Add and delete areas.
  • Change the type of an area.
  • Adjust area borders and move entire areas.
  • Add rectangular parts to areas or delete them.
  • Change the order.

The color boxes that will appear in the image pane correspond to the buttons in the toolbar:

  • Text areas are green.
  • Image areas are red.
  • Table areas are blue.

To create an area, press the button for the type of area you wish to create and highlight the entire area of text, image, or table that you want outputted in the image pane. For a more precise creation, you can also create areas using the zoom pane.
