Overview of ArcGIS Pro

ArcGIS Pro is a desktop GIS application developed by Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI). It allows users to visualize, analyze, edit, and share spatial data using 2D maps and 3D scenes. ArcGIS Pro is the modern, upgraded version of the ArcMap software, offering a more intuitive interface and tighter integration with cloud-based services like ArcGIS Online.

With ArcGIS Pro, you can:

  • Create professional maps and spatial visualizations
  • Analyze patterns and relationships in geographic data
  • Edit spatial features and attributes
  • Connect to real-time data and web services
  • Share your work as interactive web maps, dashboards, and Story Maps

ArcGIS Pro is widely used in urban planning, environmental science, transportation, public health, and many more disciplines.

Supported file types include:

  • Vector Data: Shapefiles (.shp), File Geodatabases (.gdb), Feature classes, JSON (.json), GeoJSON (.geojson), KML/KMZ (.kml, .kmz)
  • Raster Data: TIFF (.tif), JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), GRID, IMG (ERDAS Imagine)
  • Tables: Excel (.xlsx, .xls), CSV (.csv), dBASE (.dbf)
  • Project Files: ArcGIS Pro Project (.aprx), Map Package (.mpkx), Layer Package (.lpkx)

Access ArcGIS Pro

Current NYU students, faculty, and staff can request ArcGIS Pro software using our software request form. Please note that ArcGIS software only runs on Windows Operating Systems and you must be logged into Google with your NYU Net ID and password to access the software downloads.

ArcGIS Pro is installed on Data Services workstations located on the 5th floor of Bobst Library.
