Catalogue Skills

Have you found a book in out catalogue that looks interesting? You can get a lot more information about a book by looking at its item record, which includes useful information, such as:

  1. how to find the book (either on the shelf, or in an ebook database)
  2. the book's subject terms, which can help you locate other materials on a similar topic
  3. the table of contents and/or summary, to help you decide if the book is right for you

For example, if you searched for the book Machine art in the Twentieth Century in our library catalogue and open the item record you can find the book's call number, see access it as an ebook, identify its subject terms (such as "Art and Technology"), and use those subject terms to branch out into a new catalogue search.

Getting from books from database searching

Another great way to discover new titles is to look at recent book reviews within our databases. Some databases specifically focus on book reviews, such as Book Review Digest Plus (for books published before 1983) and Book Review Digest Retrospective (for books published between 1908-1982). In other databases, like those JSTOR, ProQuest, Project Muse, or EBSCO, you can limit your search to just book reviews.
