How to use NYU Libraries' repository to make your research materials widely available and citeable.

UltraViolet (ultraviolet.library.nyu.edu) is part of a suite of repositories at New York University that provide a home for research materials, operated as a partnership of the Division of Libraries and IT's Research and Instruction Technology. UltraViolet provides faculty, students, and researchers within our university community with a place where you can store your scholarly materials for open access and long-term preservation. The materials in UltraViolet represent the research, scholarship, and intellectual output of the NYU community. In addition, certain of the Libraries’ collections will also be made available via UltraViolet for ease of discovery, download, and citation.

The purpose of UltraViolet is to provide stable, long-term public access to digital content produced by eligible members of the NYU community. By default, material deposited will be immediately openly accessible under the provisions of a license selected by the depositor and made available for download worldwide over the Web.

All deposits to UltraViolet are curated by NYU librarians or by our partners in the Data Curation Network, who will ensure that your research will be findable, accessible, understandable to, and usable by others.

Here are the few of the benefits of depositing your work in UltraViolet:

  • Findability: Your work will be findable through search engines, the NYU Library catalog, scholarly search platforms like Google Scholar, and more, and can be easily cited and added to Zotero and other citation management tools.

  • Persistent Identifiers: When you publish on UltraViolet, your work will receive a DOI (digital object identifier) and persistent URL, which are two means of ensuring that your work remains citeable and accessible on the web far into the future.

  • Capacity: We are committed to working with all researchers at NYU to help publish and distribute scholarly work openly, whether a project consists of single file or spans multiple terabytes.

  • Preservation: Work deposited in UltraViolet will be stored in NYU's robust, distributed architecture, which ensures redundancy, preservation, and stable long-term storage of data and digital objects.

  • Analytics: Ultraviolet has built-in analysis tools, providing depositors with impact metrics that you can use to bolster future support for your research.

  • Contextual rendering: UltraViolet provides a robust contextual rendering of many types of files deposited on its system, including tabular data, images, and more complex serializations of information.
