Academic Sources

Academic sources can take different forms. Some of the most common are chapters from academic books, or articles from academic journals. Deciding between these types of sources can depend on your research topic - try looking for both and choose the best results!

Books and Book Chapters

If you need an academic source for your research, it can be a good idea to use one chapter from an academic book. You can find NYU Shanghai library books by searching in the Library Catalog, and using the "Resource Type" filter on the left side of the page to see only "Books".

Books from the library can be either academic or non-academic. Check if the book is academic by looking for plenty of in-text citations throughout the book chapter, and search for the author's name to see if they are a researcher. If you aren't sure, ask for help in the library!

Articles in Databases

If you're looking for an academic source on a more specific topic, journal articles can be a good option. You can access many journal articles by searching in the Library's Catalog, and using the "Resource Type" filter on the left side of the page to see only "Journal Articles".

These types of articles can also be found inside of library databases, which are sometimes specific to certain subject areas. The databases here include many different types of sources. Use filters to see only journal articles. If you need help searching, or deciding if a source is academic, ask for help in the library!

Financial Data

Recommended Strategy

Searching for financial data is very complicated if you don't understand the context and terminology used in business and finance research. One strategy that will make it easier to find relevant data is to find a news source about your topic which includes data. The news article may give context which helps you understand the data. Use the "Financial News" sources recommended in this guide to find data efficiently. This should be sufficient for your EAP class.

Any article that includes data or statistics should include a citation (formal or informal) - follow this to find the original source. If you're having trouble finding the original source, you can ask for help in the library.

Advanced Financial Data Searching

The library has many more advanced sources for financial data. If you would like to try to use these more challenging databases, some sources are available here:
