Major Sources of Financial Data

Need large amounts of raw financial data for statistical analysis? The below products are NYU's major sources.

Bloomberg
Excel plugin available.
Capital IQ
Excel plugin available. (Additional Standard & Poor's data, including Compustat, is available via WRDS.)
Datastream
Includes Worldscope. (Some modules also accessible via WRDS.)
Global Financial Data
Use AutoTrac to group series for downloading. Users must create an individual account to download.

API available. (Users must create account and request permission to use the API.)
Preqin
Faculty and PhDs may request large data downloads (those that require delivery via link) via Preqin's live chat support. Preqin must confirm your standing, so please be sure your public-facing directory entry on an NYU departmental website is up to date. (Reach out the the Business Library for help if your department does not maintain a public-facing directory.) Private Equity and Venture Capital data modules are also accessible via WRDS.
LSEG Workspace (formerly Refinitiv)
Already have an account? Log into the web interface or download the Mac/PC software.

API access available. Use the "Codebook" command or start in Python.
SDC Platinum
Includes data on mergers and acquisitions, global new issues, corporate governance, corporate restructurings, venture capital, and global public finance. Accessible via LSEG Workspace and WRDS.
Wind
Only available to select scholars at Stern.
Only available to NYU Shanghai.
Excel plugin available.
WRDS
Can be queried from statistical software (SAS, R, STATA, Python, MATLAB, PostgreSQL). Includes WRDS Cloud, a high-performance research computing center accessible via an SSH connection. Popular datasets include: CRSP, Compustat, Datastream + Worldscope, IBES, SDC Platinum, TAQ.

Researcher Accounts

If you anticipate that your research will require more data than these accounts afford, you may need to work with the vendor to purchase a custom data pull.

Pitchbook
Faculty and PhDs may purchase a researcher account with expanded downloading capabilities for $2,500 if WRDS access does not meet their needs. Exporting and printing rates for researcher accounts are: 1,000 daily / 2,000 monthly rows of company, deal, or fund data and 500 daily / 1,000 monthly rows of people data.

Text Mining Financial News Sources

ProQuest TDM Studio
ProQuest TDM Studio allows research teams at NYU the ability to mine large volumes of published content from the millions of pages of news, scholarly and other publications provided to the campus community through current ProQuest subscriptions. Includes the ability to text mine the Wall Street Journal.

LexisNexis REST API
The LexisNexis Academic Web Services API (WSApi) is a subscription service that allows researchers to text mine LexisNexis' full text news collections, including business and economic news sources.
