How to use EndNote to organize references and format papers

Syncing your EndNote library

If you would like to access your references from other computers or collaborate with other EndNote users, you will need to create an EndNote Online account and then sync it to the EndNote software installed on your computer.

  1. Create an EndNote Online account by starting at https://access.clarivate.com/login?app=endnote Click Register, then fill out the form. Make sure you use your NYU email address to create the account.
  2. Open EndNote on your computer.
  3. On Mac, click to open the EndNote 20 or 21 menu at the top of the screen and choose Preferences. On Windows, click the Edit menu at the top of the screen and choose Preferences.
  4. In the Preferences window that opens up, click Sync (on the left side).
  5. Enter your NYU email address and the password you gave when you created your EndNote Online account.
  6. Check the box to sync Automatically, and click Save.

How NOT to share EndNote

Never, ever share an EndNote library via a cloud service like Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, OneDrive. This can corrupt the library, and it may not be recoverable, and you will be very sad.

Sharing your entire EndNote library

  1. Open EndNote and go to the File menu (at the top of the screen) and click Share...
  2. Enter email addresses for who you want to share the library with, and specify their Read/Write permissions.
  3. Add a message (optional) and click the Invite button.

Sharing a group of EndNote references

  1. In EndNote, click on the Organize tab, and choose Manage My Groups.
  2. Click the box next to the group you want to share.
  3. Click on Manage Sharing.
  4. Click on Start sharing this group.
  5. Enter the email addresses of the users that you want to share your group with. (Note: these must be the email addresses affiliated with their EndNote Online accounts.)
  6. Select Read-only or Read & Write (allow others to edit and add references to the group).
  7. Click on Apply. Shared groups will appear in the "Groups Shared by Others" section.

Sharing an EndNote library over email

  1. In EndNote, go to File and then choose Compressed Library (.enlx).
  2. Follow the prompts to compress your entire library, selected references, or a certain group or group set with or without attachments.
  3. Save the newly compressed file. Then you will be able to attach it to an email message.
