Single Texts

Manifold Projects can be as simple as single texts published in an accessible, digital, and open access format with a table of contents and simple metadata. Some of these Projects hosted on the NYU Manifold instance incorporate digitized archival materials as Resources related to the texts. Check out some of these examples from previous Projects!

Frankenstein
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein follows Victor Frankenstein, a scientist on a mission to impart life onto a creature made from corpses. Thus, Frankenstein’s Monster is created—an 8 foot tall creature who, unlike in the movie depictions of him, is highly intellectual. Frankenstein rejects his creation, causing Frankenstein’s Monster to fall into a pit of despair, vowing to hurt Frankenstein in the way that Frankenstein hurt him. This digital edition, created by Mandy Abokhair, seeks to bring together Mary Shelley’s original manuscript pages with a free, online version of the text. These manuscript pages are stored at the Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford and have been accessed through the Shelley-Godwin Archive website. This digital edition of Frankenstein illuminates specific moments in the manuscript where something interesting is happening—mass amounts of editing, lack of editing, torn pages, and famous quotes. The manuscript pages also include Percy Bysshe Shelley’s edits and notes. The manuscript pages are labelled by chapter according to Shelley's distinction, not the modern edition's published chapters. Seeing the manuscript pages alongside the digital text helps to foster an understanding of where texts originate as well as providing a unique insight into Mary Shelley’s thought process. The ultimate goal of this digital edition is to allow people to explore Frankenstein in a new way—a way that incorporates both published and unpublished texts.

The Republic: An Ideal Commonwealth
The Republic of Plato (1901) by Plato, translated by Benjamin Jowett. This Project contains both the original Greek and translated English versions of the text as two distinct Texts.

These Projects display catalogs or archives for exhibitions and collections affiliated with NYU or developed by NYU Manifold users. These Projects focus on a mix of Resources and media types and are meant to showcase materials elsewhere while providing further context and accessible browsing. We All Return To The Place That It Started
Exhibition catalog for We All Return To The Place That It Started, featuring major and minor students in the Studio Art program in the Department of Art and Art Professions, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, New York University. We All Return To The Place That It Started was on view in the Mamdouha Bobst Gallery at NYU's Elmer Holmes Bobst Library from July 14 - August 9, 2023.

Journals

While not technically a Project Collection, Journals in NYU Manifold represent a highly useful feature of the platform for publishing “Issues” (essentially, serialized Projects) collected in volumes and journals much like other forms of journal publishing. Bridging Fields: An Interdisciplinary Graduate Journal of Library and Information Sciences
Bridging Fields publishes the work of library and information science students working across disciplines. The journal is published by students and educators within the Dual Degree Program at New York University and Long Island University. The Dual Degree Program fosters mentorship and career-building opportunities for prospective library and information professionals pursuing NYU subject master's degrees across interdisciplinary programs, while also studying for their MSLIS through Long Island University's Palmer School of Library and Information Science.

Open Educational Resources

This Project Collection focuses on educational materials and resources that are openly licensed via creative commons or are in the public domain. The focus of these Projects is to provide free, accessible, and reusable materials for education and instruction as part of broader efforts in international higher education to make learning more affordable and accessible for students. Manifold Minis A Brief Introduction
This Project represents the results of five weekly Manifold Mini sessions conducted in Spring 2020. Each 30 minute session began with a brief demo and ended with questions and answers. The lessons were followed up with emails and recaps on the CUNY Manifold Users group forum on the CUNY Academic Commons.

Wikimedians at NYU
This Project holds articles for discussion with the Wikimedians at NYU group.

Dual Degree Student Projects

This Project Collection includes Projects created by students receiving dual degrees: a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from LIU's Palmer School and a Master of Arts or Science from NYU's Graduate School of Arts and Science (GSAS) or in Costume or Food Studies within NYU's Steinhardt School.

An Extremely Brief History of How Video Has Changed the World
This Project presents a history of video and video technology and highlights the many ways we utilize and interact with video.

Songs of the Beaded Bag Longfellow's Poem as Portrayed in a Yakama Beaded Bag
This Project reflects the influence of literature on handcrafted Native American beadwork bags. Looking at two main sources: 1. a beaded bag donated to the Yakima Valley Museum, and 2. on-line edition of "The Song of Hiawatha" written in 1855 by the American author Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882).
