NYU Manifold Tips & Resources

This guide provides an in-depth exploration of Manifold's features and walkthroughs for developing projects beyond initial creation. This is the second of two NYU Manifold LibGuides.

Though NYU Manifold is visible to the general public, there are several reasons to register for a Manifold Reader account when navigating through NYU Manifold. For one, certain Reading Groups and access permissions will only be available to you once you have set up a Reader account and been registered by the appropriate administrator. More generally, Reader accounts allow people to engage with Texts by saving collections, highlighting passages, and contributing annotations. These features enable Readers to transition from passive reading to engagement with the Texts using the full range of Features that Manifold offers.

A helpful reminder: you can only annotate with a registered Reader account; go to the Getting Started in Manifold LibGuide and follow “Setting up a Reader account” to reach this step. To learn how to embed a Resource in a Text as an annotation, see “Placing Resources” under “Adding Content.”

This section will provide a basic introduction to Reading and annotation capabilities in Manifold. For further documentation on Reader options in Manifold, we recommend the Manifold Documentation on Reading in Manifold.

Annotating, Sharing, and Citing

To start interacting with the Text, highlight a passage with your cursor and a pop-up box will appear with four options to click: Share, Annotate, Highlight, and Current Reading Group. Clicking on each of these selections offer unique features in turn:

  1. Share allows you to either generate a citation of the selected passage or link to the passage on social media platforms. Citations can be under the APA, ALA, or Chicago styles. Manifold currently allows for posting to Facebook or X through linked accounts.
  2. Annotate allows you to add a new comment to the selected passage or to reply to a previous annotation if available.
  3. Highlight will either leave a highlight over the selected passage or, if you have already highlighted there, will remove the highlighting once clicked again.
  4. Current Group provides options for Reading Groups in which the Text and its Project are located so that you can select who can see your annotations. If you have joined a Reading Group for a course, make sure you are in the correct group by clicking on “CURRENT GROUP” and selecting the course group from the list BEFORE you begin Annotating or Commenting. Otherwise, your annotations will not be visible.

Reader View

In the upper right hand corner of the screen, you will see five icons that allow you to control the look and feel of the Text in the Manifold reading interface and manage your account.

  • Notepad - My Notes + Comments: Once you've highlighted or annotated a passage in a Text, it will appear here.
  • Eye - Hide or make visible your or other’s Highlights, Annotations, Resources, and Reading Groups.
  • Aa - Adjust appearance: font style, light or dark mode, and margins.
  • Magnifying Glass - Search within the Chapter, Text, or Project.
  • Profile icon/image -  Open a side menu to My Starred, My Notes + Comments, My Reading Groups, Edit Profile, Notifications, Privacy, and Logout.
