Machines and Society

A growing guide on the latest in data-driven research and emerging technologies at the intersection of society, information and technology.

Introduction

This section documents the events that NYU Shanghai Library organized or co-hosted that delved into the topics at the intersection of technology, information, and society.

Furthermore, this section covers the following topics and offers a range of resources on generative A.I. and its implications for our society, which complement the discussions held during the events.

AI for Society

The AI for Science event was part of the AI Forum Series, co-hosted by the NYU Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning and NYU Shanghai Library.

How critical is AI safety to humanity? What other aspects of human values are important for our society when developing language and multimodal models?
How to engage stakeholders who have been less visible in conversations in AI governance?
How would voices from diverse fields such as finance, education, law and engineering converge and complement each other?

AI for Science

The AI for Science event was part of the AI Forum Series, co-hosted by the NYU Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning and NYU Shanghai Library.

Why is AI changing scientific discovery? Why can some scientific problems be more effectively solved using AI technology?
What practical AI-based scientific applications can we expect in five years?
Will AI change our goals and purposes of education? What education would we need for people to thrive in society?

A.I. Computes. But Does It Create?

This panel explored generative artificial intelligence and its implications for creativity, technology development, and business.

Are current generative A.I. models truly creative? How are concepts of "knowledge" and "thinking" different for humans and machines? What relevance is data and training for artists, when we talk about A.I. generated art? What are the consequences of these tools being distributed by giant tech companies? Can there be common ground amongst all stakeholders utilizing generative A.I. models? Where will the technology be in five years? Where is China in this landscape?
