In the catalog to the right of the search box there is a dropdown menu; these are your search scopes. They allow you to filter on a set of resources at the start of your search.
To use scopes that include articles follow these steps:
Enter your search terms, for the example it's "disability and higher education," then select a scope. By default the scope for search.library.nyu.edu is "Library catalog." This will give you the widest results and include articles, along with books, journals, audio/visual, and other materials.
If you click the dropdown menu, all the search scope options appear for the version of the catalog you're using. For a search using search.library.nyu.edu, use "Library catalog" or "Articles." NYU Abu Dhabi Library and NYU Shanghai Library catalog views will have different scope options.
For NYU Abu Dhabi Library catalog use the "Search Everything" scope.
For NYU Shanghai Library catalog articles will be included in the results with "All at Shanghai," "All at NYU," and "Articles" scopes.
Results of the search in the example set to "Library catalog" will include articles and other electronic resources (e.g., book chapters, conference proceedings, etc.), in addition to books, journals, audio/video, and other resource types.
You can use the "Resource Type" filter to adjust what you want displayed in your results.
You may be wondering how the catalog's new article search could change your research workflow. The article search feature does not replace the tools found on the Articles & Databases tab; you can use both resources for more efficient searching by paying attention to their optimal use cases.
Despite including a large portion of articles, the new catalog does not include every article from every electronic collection NYU subscribes to. If you cannot find an article title, we recommend you:
Look up the journal title using the Catalog Search box or the Journals tab, and follow the link out to the journal
Do further research in subject-specific databases or in WorldCat
Ask a Librarian for help with locating the item
If you still can’t find the article, use Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Make request using the “Article” option. We will do our best to find a copy for you.
As with all of our electronic resources (streaming media, journals, etc.), you can access the material using any of the links in the “View Online” section when you open up the record.
For many articles, you may also see direct download links on the search result for that item, as seen below. Note that based on your browser, the PDF may either open as a new browser tab, or automatically go into your download folder.
We understand that this article integration can be overwhelming or counterproductive to how you normally search our catalog. Follow these steps to easily exclude articles from your search and go back to the “old” catalog experience:
In the search box, there is a drop down menu towards the right side. Click the drop-down menu.
The options you see are called search scopes. These allow you to filter on a set of resources at the start of your search. Select the option “Library Catalog (excluding articles)” and start your search.
