NYU Libraries Catalog Features

An overview of features in NYU Libraries' online catalog (search.library.nyu.edu).

Requesting Materials

Users will have access to the same requesting services as before.  There are just some slight differences in how those services display in the catalog.

Requesting Locker or Desk Pick-up

Users can request available items for locker or circulation desk pick-up regardless of whether the item is available onsite or offsite. For items available offsite, you must place a request to receive the item.

Requests are usually fulfilled and made available within 3-5 days, so if you need an item immediately and it is available onsite we recommend you go to the stacks and grab it yourself.

If you prefer to pick up items from the lockers or at the circulation desk, or you need a book that is only available offsite, you can place the request from within the catalog by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to the catalog, if you haven't already, to see the request options for the item.

  2. Click the option “Request Physical Copy”Screenshot of a catalog record for the book "Be not afraid of love." A red box in the Get It section of the page highlights the link to request a physical copy.

  3. The request for will ask you to select a pickup location from the dropdown options. Then submit the request!

    • Note for Bobst users: For locker pick ups select “NYU Bobst Locker Delivery.” For Bobst Circulation Desk, select "NYU Bobst."

Requesting Periodicals and Multi-Volumes

Request links for journals, periodicals, and other types of multi-volume materials are displayed on the specific tile within the location. This is different than other resource types in the catalog.

For example, NYU-NY has physical copies of the journal “Aging”, with issues 1-367 held offsite. Screenshot of a catalog record for US documents in the Bobst Offsite collection. The Get It section does not include request options.

To place a request for a specific volume, you need to first click into the library location (NYU Bobst Offsite) to expand the list of volumes. You can then place the request on the volume you prefer.

Requesting for Unavailable Items

An NYU-NY item may be unavailable for various reasons: it’s checked out, it’s getting repaired, etc. Luckily, NYU is a part of the Interlibrary Loan  (ILL) and EZBorrow systems which allows NYU-NY users to borrow items from partner libraries.

Requests for unavailable items can now be placed directly from the catalog itself. Library staff review the request and assess what the best option is and process it as an EZBorrow or Interlibrary Loan request.

How do you know if an item can be requested, even if it’s unavailable?

If the item says “Request from Partner Libraries,” you can place a request using the following directions:

  1. If an item is unavailable for any reason, most times it should say “Request from Partner Libraries” from the results page. If it does, click into the record to view request options. Please note that you must be signed in for the request options to appear.

  2. Scroll down to the “Get It” section and click the “Request from Partner Libraries” link.Item record display for the book "A Lotus of Another Color", with the link "Request from Partner Libraries" in the "Get It" section highlighted with a red box.

  3. A form in your Interlibrary Loan portal will open. The citation information for the item should auto-fill. Review this information for accuracy. Then, select your preferred pick-up location and the date after which you no longer want the item. Click "submit request" to send the request.

  4. Delivery timeframes vary depending on where the item is held. You can check the status of your request in your Interlibrary Loan portal, or contact lib-ill@nyu.edu for more information. You will receive an email when your item is delivered to your specified location.

Requesting Items from Consortium Libraries

If an item is available at a consortium, there are two ways you can access it:

  1. Place a request within the catalog for delivery to NYU to be pick up at your preferred NYU library location

  2. In most cases you can go directly to the consortium library. If you’re unsure if you have access to that material, please use that library’s Ask-a-Librarian service to double check.

Delivery to NYU

To place a request on an available consortium item, open up the record and click “Request from Partner Libraries” from the “How to Get It” section. Fill out the form, and select your preferred pick-up location then submit.
