NYU Libraries LibGuides Style Manual

An evolving manual of best practices for creating and maintaining New York University LibGuides. This manual is maintained by the LibGuides Editorial Working Group.

Before You Publish Your Guide

  1. Go over the Checklist for Creating a LibGuide to make sure you've followed all the protocols.
  2. Run an accessibility checker tool on your guide.
  3. Fill out the Accessibility Review Request (Monday) Form to trigger a manual accessibility check by the LibGuides Editorial Working Group. This takes up to 2 weeks to fulfill, so please plan accordingly with when you want the guide to go live (it should be either private or unpublished until you get the completed review).

Changing Publication Status

There are three possible publishing statuses for a guide:

  • Unpublished - Use when you're in the process of creating a guide or when you want to disable viewing of an existing guide. (You and any co-owners/co-editors can access the guide on the editing side, but no one else can view it.)
  • Published - Use when you want to make the guide visible to everyone via the guides homepage. Most guides are given this status. In order to assign this status, your accessibility review must be complete and any accessibility updates made in order to comply with NYU's Digital Accessibility policy
  • Private - Use when you want to make the guide visible only to those who have the direct URL (i.e. it will not show up via the guides homepage). This status might given to a course guide or a guide created for internal purposes only. In order to assign this status, your accessibility review must be complete and any accessibility updates made in order to comply with NYU's Digital Accessibility policy

To publish your guide:

  1. At the top right of the page, click the arrow next to the word "Unpublished" to reveal the drop-down menu.
  2. Choose "Change Status & Share."
  3. In the "Publication status" drop-down choose "Published" if you want to enable maximum visibility, or "Private" if you want to limit visibility to those with whom you share the direct URL.
