This year’s theme - 'Mapping Minds, Shaping the World'is all about how GIS technology is reshaping our world by blending creativity and data to reveal hidden trends, drive sustainability, and make smarter decisions using the power of location data. (gisday.com). Whether you're new to GIS or a seasoned professional, there's something for everyone!

This event is hosted by NYU Data Services, Research and Instructional Technology (NYU IT), and Research and Research Services (NYU Libraries) in partnership with the Center for Urban Science + Progress, NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

We are offering a series of activities including lightning talks, technical workshops, networking space, and a mapping competition. Please check out our program of activities, and calls for lightning talks and GIS/mapping competition below.

About International GIS Day

Every year GIS Day is celebrated around the world on the third Wednesday in November. GIS Day is a day dedicated to showing, teaching, and inspiring and empowering others to explore the possibilities of GIS - in their work, in their schools, where they volunteer, or even for their hobbies and interests. (gisday.com).

The theme of this year is "Mapping Minds, Shaping the World."

What is GIS?

GIS stands for Geographic Information System(s). GIS is a technology that is used to create, manage, analyze, and map all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships, and geographic context. The benefits include improved communication, efficiency, management, and decision-making. (esri.com).
