Data Services Class Descriptions

Information, materials, and schedules for all currently offered Data Services classes.
QGIS is an open source software package for geospatial analysis. This workshop covers simple GIS analyses using raster data.
Software:

QGIS (see alternative builds for some Mac OS downloads). Computer workstations with QGIS installed are available for in-person tutorials in Bobst 617. For remote tutorials, while some patrons decide to approach tutorials as a demonstration of the software, other patrons approach tutorials with a more “hands-on” approach and wish to interact with the software during the tutorial. If the latter is the case, we recommend referencing our supported software page for additional information on accessing the software prior to the tutorial.

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of GIS is required. If attending virtually, you must download and install QGIS to follow along (see instructions)
Skills Taught / Learning Outcomes:
  • Import raster datasets into QGIS
  • Visualize raster data in QGIS
  • Interpret information contained within raster datasets through visual observation and by calculating summary statistics
  • Clip existing raster datasets with respect to polygons of interest
  • Integrate vector data with raster data, and use raster analysis tools such as Zonal Statistics and Raster Calculator, to answer research questions relevant to public policy and planning
  • Implement basic geoprocessing functions in QGIS (i.e. generate distance buffers for analysis).
