NYU Libraries Statement on Book Censorship

Statement of the NYU Division of Libraries on Book Censorship

New York University Libraries is a global organization that advances teaching, learning, research, and scholarly inquiry in an environment dedicated to the open exchange of information. We are committed to providing equitable access to information and diverse resources. We respect, encourage, and embrace the diversity of individuals and groups, ideas, backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. We have a responsibility to protect the rights of all readers and provide access to materials that represent the lived experience of people of all races, gender identities, sexualities, and religions. We strongly support the American Library Association's unequivocal condemnation of book censorship. We stand in solidarity with the nation's public libraries and school libraries as they resist the pressure to restrict access to books or remove them from the shelves. Librarians use their expertise to provide access to a wide range of ideas and viewpoints, and in so doing uphold the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
